Community Development

Welcome Back,

In my last posts we have discussed about our personal and professional development. But this is not sufficient to be successful in your career. In addition we should be aware of community development.

Today we discuss about what is community development and how can we make an impact?

Now, when you are aware of what personal values are and how you can do self development. Let's move on to the world around you. Think on about the people around you. Such as your neighbors, friends, Old people playing chess in garden, and so many.

What you can do for them?
What you can do for your Community?

What do we understand by the term community?

There are many definitions of term community in various different dictionaries. In general the term community is defined as "A group of people that live in the same area but are also united because of the same interest, religion or may be any other social feature".

The next question we would like to discuss is

What is community development?

This is very hot topic in academia and is very popular among society organisation. An american psychiatrists has identifies three identical ingredients of community.

Inclusivity
Consensus
Commitment

Moreover he focus on the community building process which typically goes through various stages.

Starting from "Pseudo-Community"

to "Ideal or true community".

Ideal or true community is the one where the members of community have empathy and understanding of each other.

Now we have the idea that we want a community based on empathy and understanding. Lets get ready and get to work.

First of all try to identify what are the problem in your community for which you want to find a solution. For example:

Is there too much garbage on the street?
Is there any need of street dogs?
and so on....

The most important thing in community development is defining the problem first. Once you know what you would like to improve or change, Share your idea. Speak with your family, with your friends, with your neighbors, with your classmates. Remember that if you join forces with some of them the possibility of making an impact will be bigger.

Think how you are going to act. Working in a group you may work in a more systematic and structured way.

You can join an organisation which shares your mission and vision through NGO's, CSO's or any other organisation in your society. Just find out to whom do will address the problem. To the local government, to the central government, to all politicians or may be the business community.

Remember that these are the key steps for achieving your goals:

  1. Identify a clear issue and possible solution.
  2. Find the right people to act with you.
  3. Address the issue to relevant institutions.
Today do an exercise, Identify any 5 NGO's or CSO's that are active in your community. List their organisational mission, vision and activities. Also find out how you can join them and become their member.

In my next posts we will learn how to present your solution to the identified issue.

So What do you want to change in the community for its betterment. Share your thinking in comments below.

Personal Development

Welcome back, Guys in my last post we have discussed about Youth empowerment.   Today we are going to discuss about Personal development in detail. Here you have to answer yourself two questions: What are your values? What do you love doing? Did you ever think about which values are important to you and guiding principles in your life. Which values are less important to you? It is very common to hear from career experts that you should define your values first, before deciding your career. This sounds pretty easy but you cannot define your values before knowing what they are. Different peoples have different values and these values often determine the things that they do and love. Values strongly had believes that you might not know you have. Our Family Our Friends Our Community Our Experience These all contribute towards our values. Who we are? and How we see the world? We often tends to think that our believes are based on our realit

Building and Articulating Career Path

Welcome Back, In last post we discussed on how can we discover our professional self . But discovering yourself on social, general and professional aspects is not all you need to have. When you leave your institution and go out looking for a job and finding your career you will find the term C.V. quite a lot. sadly some institutions are so focused on your academic performance that they forget to prepare you for the big wide world of work. Many students are unaware of how to write a good C.V. A good C.V. reflects the soul of your past experiences. You might have experience in different field which are important to you. Remember don't use same C.V. for different job opportunities. Rather try to elaborate only those parts of your experiences which are relevant to the job you are applying for. You can search for the details of job on their websites, twitter accounts, etc. Study the job requirement and prepare your C.V. accordingly. Your C.V. should be tr
